It is these traditions – of fortitude, ingenuity and resourcefulness - that NORPLAN has nurtured as we seek to plan, engineer and construct the myriad of infrastructure projects on behalf of our clients around the world.
NORPLAN was established in 1971 and combines the resources of two of Norway’s leading consulting companies -
Multiconsult AS
(www.multiconsult.no)
Asplan Viak AS
(www.asplanviak.no)
- with each owning a 50 per cent stake in the company. However, through these two owners, NORPLAN can call upon a direct heritage stretching back through a century of innovation.
NORPLAN is a privately owned company offering a broad range of international consulting services in planning, economics, engineering, architecture and project management. Through our two partners we have access to over 1350 highly skilled staff with a range of capabilities from ecology and finance through to social sciences and engineering, who can work independently or in teams to pursue a ‘total project’ methodology.
We believe it is this multi-disciplinary approach to our activities – looking at our work from a completely holistic perspective – that enables us to see the ‘big picture’, bringing best advantage to our customers. As a leading international consulting company we recognise the responsibility we have to our shareholders – but we never lose sight of value we can bring to society at large as we seek to make a positive contribution to the communities in which we operate.
NORPLAN is a wholly independent operation, with no interests in any manufacturing or contracting organisations. Our impartiality guarantees an objective level of professional advice.
Our activities cover a number of distinct markets and our four divisions have been created to reflect the needs of these sectors:
| • |
Natural Resources and Renewable Energy |
| • |
Industry, Oil and Gas |
| • |
Urban Planning and Development |
| • |
Water and Environment |
Our historic strength lies in our solid understanding of the needs of clients – more often than not government organisations and public utilities, though we are increasingly working with private investors and project developers. Our knowledge in project development is matched by our understanding of project finance and we have long worked with the likes of the World Bank, regional development banks – including EBRD, EIB, IDB, ADB and AfDB – UN organisations and international development agencies in the Nordic countries.
Since its foundation in 1971 NORPLAN has undertaken projects throughout the developed and developing world. To date, we have carried out over 600 separate assignments in nearly 100 countries.
Particular recent highlights include:
| • |
Power sector assessment project, Afghanistan |
| • |
Concrete oil platforms in Sakhalin field, Russia |
| • |
Lower Kihansi hydropower plant, Tanzania |
| • |
Rock cavern storage for petroleum products in Singapore |
| • |
Utility mapping project, Abu Dhabi |
| • |
Snøhvit LNG plant, Norway |
In addition to our main office in Oslo, NORPLAN is also the major owner in NORPLAN Tanzania Ltd, Dar es Salaam, and in NORPLAN Uganda Ltd, in Kampala. Whenever necessary we also set up project offices and presently run them in Sarajevo, Bosnia; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and Vientiane, Laos.
NORPLAN holds great store by working as much as possible with local consulting companies. We recognise that long-term sustainability in the community can only come about through teamwork. That means bringing our own knowledge and skills and marrying them with local talent to build competence and technology transfer for lasting benefit. Our technological capabilities often allow us to win contracts, but it is our commitment to social responsibility that helps to bring true success to our projects.
Project Management
NORPLAN considers every aspect of the project. As well as project management specialists we can call upon NORPLAN specialists from biophysical and social sciences backgrounds, as well as geo-logists, landscape architects, hydrologists, economists and engineers, among others. It is this expertise that allows us to successfully tailor our own skills to the exacting requirements of any project.
