Urban planning and development

According to figures from the United Nations, more than half of the world’s population now lives in cities. With growing pressures on urban populations, it is urgent to change how we plan and design our cities and to bring about social and ecological development that improves the health of cities and towns.

NORPLAN is a leading specialist within urban development and has built up an extensive expertise in sustainable urban planning. Our approach is to consider all aspects of the urban environment to facilitate long-term sustainable development.

Our range of services covers all project phases such as pre-feasibility and feasibility studies; conceptual and detailed design; tender documents; and project supervision. We cover both buildings and outdoor spaces and address both feasibility and costs during the build, as well as functionality and aesthetics for the end-user.

Our services within Urban Planning and Development include:

• Master planning and urban design

Transportation and Infrastructure

Good transport infrastructure allows urban and rural developments to function efficiently. NORPLAN offers professional and cost-effective solutions to meet the full range of transport infrastructure demands.

We have experience of everything from design, supervision and maintenance, through to feasibility studies for roads and public transport.

In addition, we participate in the Norwegian Transportation Network (NTN) – a partnership between Norway’s major consultancy firms and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. Through NTN and other projects and partnerships we have built up extensive expertise within all phases of transportation development.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Geomatics
NORPLAN’s Urban Planning and Development division specialises in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Geomatics.

We design and implement information systems and spatial data infrastructure to support the basic business of enterprises and organizations. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) combine spatial information, databases and images, providing powerful tools for mapping and analysis in support of project planning and decision-making. In addition, GIS is an integrated component of other projects and Environmental Impact Assessments.

Our consultants play an important role in developing information technology strategies and implementing systems for central, regional and local government in Norway, as well as for international organizations like the UN and the World Bank, and national/municipal institutions.

Successful information system development requires close co-operation between experienced specialists who understand the principal business of the client and the client’s own staff. We also work closely with GIS/IT specialists and other specialists with an in-depth understanding of the technical aspects of the client’s business.

NORPLAN also offers stand-alone GIS services, such as:
