Water and Environment

The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that water management is a key factor in the global battle to remove the scourge of extreme poverty and to build secure and prosperous lives for hundreds of millions of people in the developing world.

As an organisation that attaches importance to social and ethical principles alongside business value creation, our water and environment activities are a barometer of our desire to undertake projects that enhance communities.

Water Supply
Down the years we have developed a wealth of expertise covering all aspects of water supply and sanitation engineering. We are at the forefront of improvements in water treatment, network design, leak detection, utility mapping and GIS applications. In both developed and developing countries more stringent regulations, combined with environ-
mental imperatives, are putting new pressures on the management of water resources. Our in-house knowledge is helping to meet both the technical and social aspects of these challenges – at a national and local level.

Waste Management
As the world's population surpasses the six billion mark and economic growth continues apace, the challenge of waste management becomes ever more acute. NORPLAN has in-depth experience in waste management issues. We are leaders in the study, planning and design of landfill sites – both new and upgrades to existing facilities – that operate with as little impact as possible on the local environment. We work to satisfy current legislation, but strive to do more than this by, for example, undertaking landscaping or developing systems to deal with biogas.

Using our own knowledge to develop water, sanitation and environmental projects is valuable to communities but does not necessarily create optimum sustainable developments locally. So we also work closely with local utilities and national organisations to transfer our skills to enhance human resource development, financial activities and operational management in these bodies – which creates much greater long-term benefits.

NORPLAN can call upon experts in the fields of engineering, economics, sociology and environmentalism to bring about for customers and communities changes that directly benefit their daily lives. Projects in Nepal, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina are examples where our commitment, drive and determination have made a real difference.

Our services in this field include:
Water supply production, treatment and distribution systems
Sanitation and sewerage plants
Waste management recovery and disposal
Contaminated soil investigation and treatment
Capacity building and institutional knowledge sharing
Environmental assessments
Substainable services for urban, peri-urban and rural people
Socio-economic surveys
